Waggaroos win first Interclub

Sunday, 1 April 2012

Waggaroos beat Albury 16-11 at the first of the Interclub Series events against Albury today on a newly mapped area near Table Top that proved to be a wonderful challenge in a small area: intricate contour features created by diggings and erosion control with fields of boulders spread across the map.

Long grass made it hard work. And the 1:5000 scale meant a huge amount of detail was presented to the participant and it came up quickly.

A feature of the event was that there was one control site on all courses where competitors were obliged to wait for two minutes before proceeding. Failure to do so incurred a time penalty. Ostensibly this was to enjoy the brilliant 360° view but most spent their time catching their breath after the tough climb to the top and working out how to take the next few controls.

For the Interclub competition points are awarded according to places on each course for an equivalent numbers of participants from each club.

Alex and Deb Davey led the way for the WaggaRoos with a quinella on the 5km course. Albury’s two Robs – Simmons and Matthews – filled the next two places. Waggaroos John Oliver then managed to hold off Albury’s Norm McCann to give Waggaroos a 13 – 8 lead.

Albury clawed a little back with Rick Armstrong comfortably beating Waggaroo Wes Campbell on the 4km course and bring the score to 14-10 in WaggaRoos favour.

Wagga’s Kath Oliver then reclaimed the points by winning the 3km course and giving Waggaroos a 16-11 victory.
