Waggaroos Summer Series underway

Sunday, 4 December 2011

Debbie Davey was recognised for her consistent performances throughout 2011 being named as the Orienteering NSW Orienteer of the Year in the W50 class.

Her award was presented at the Waggaroos Awards Night held during the week. Other Waggaroos who were recognised at State level were Briohny Seaman who came third in the W21 Orienteer of Year competition and Alex Davey who won the Points Event in the Red 5 category.

Alex Davey, Deb Davey, Briohny Seaman, Lucy McGarva, Kath Oliver and John Oliver all received Orienteering Australia Merit Badges.

Last Thursday evening competition continued in the Summer Series of Orienteering with the second event being conducted in the Bourkelands – Hilltop area.

Starting in Bedervale Rd participants had a choice of 30 min or 45 min to find the answers to questions about the Bourkeland and Hilltop area. Questions included the number of wooden posts at number 45, the garden feature at number 11, various telephone numbers and power pole numbers. Answers carried a point score depending on distance and difficulty in locating. Time penalties applied for returning overtime.

The SportIdent system is proving an asset in timing of participants.

On the 45 min course Alex Davey chose to stay in the flatter areas early and moved into the hillier sections towards the end of his allocated time. Although this kept him on the paved areas it resulted in a lot of zigging and zagging in and around the streets and laneways but nonetheless he picked up a creditable 180 points out of a possible 260. Debbie Davey was not far behind with 165 points. Briohny Seaman was pulled around by Darcy the Dog and finished third with 125 points.

The 30min course was much closer with most competitors heading into the Hilltop region where higher valued points were achievable. The challenge was whether to take a direct route through the long grass or go more circuitously around the roads.

Bob Moore did it best finishing with a very good 115 points. John Oliver went in the same general direction but tackled a slightly different set of questions. Although also amassing 115 points he was 39 seconds overtime and incurred a 5 point penalty. Wes Campbell finished in third place with 95 points just ahead of Pauline Moore who scored 90 points.

The third event in the Summer Series and the last event for 2011 will be conducted at Wagga beach next Thursday evening starting at 6 pm.
