Wes Campbell wins handicap honours

If you have a broken leg, what better way is there to spend a pleasant Sunday morning sitting in the sun and officiating as the Start-Finish marshal of an orienteering event?

So it was with Debbie Davey who snapped a bone while orienteering a month ago. Waggaroos had to cancel their scheduled event in the Livingstone State Conservation Park because the access roads were too wet so conducted a street event around the Tatton area.

A score event format was used with participants having 45 minutes to find the answers to questions about the local area. Answers were weighted in point score according to distance and navigational difficulty.

A revised map of the area produced by Alex Davey was a vast improvement on previous maps and the course offered several challenges: whether to climb early while fresh and gather smaller value points or stay down on the flats where the running is faster but points were more widely spaced? Is it worth the time to deviate to collect those points or should that one be missed in favour of more points over there?

Debbie, however, was relaxed in the sunshine while others were working hard.

Briohny Davey amassed a very good 175 points from a possible 210 but John Oliver pressed hard and was not far behind with 165. Pauline Moore and Wes Campbell tied on 135 points. However this was enough to give Wes handicap honours for the day. Bob Moore finished with 115.

Next event is scheduled for Sunday 5 September at Pomingalarna Reserve starting at 10am from the Golf Club end. Turn off Sturt Hwy into McNickle Rd and then immediately left. Follow the road and track past the golf club car park to the assembly area.
